This week I chose jimsonweed as the weedy wonder for its distinct look and smell. Around Michigan it is currently forming green seed capsules.
Jimsonweed is a member of the nightshade family and every part of the plant is poisonous both when consumed and when in contact with the skin. As a “warning sign” this plant has a disagreeable odor and spiny seed capsules. Many people and animals have become ill and/or died due to exposure to the toxins in this plant. When studying this weed we wear gloves to protect ourselves the toxins.
