Last week the 2015 Spring semester began here at Michigan State University and with it we welcomed two new graduate students. Both Kelsey Rogers and Dan Wilkinson are beginning work on M.S. degrees with Christy Sprague in weed science. Both completed their B.S. degrees in Crop and Soil Science at MSU in 2014 and 2012, respectively. As their research projects develop, details and related presentations will be made available on their personnel pages at Welcome to the team!

For the 4th year running, our weed science team had a pumpkin carving contest to celebrate Halloween. Pumpkins were displayed on Oct. 31 in the Plant and Soil Sciences Building, where anyone was allowed to vote for their favorite.

This year’s winning pumpkin belonged to graduate student Victoria Ackroyd. Congratulations on an awesome design!

We had a great turn out for the 3rd Annual Weed Science Pumpkin Carving Contest. We choose to have a theme this year: Despicable Me. Our winning pumpkin was #6 designed by Crop and Soil Sciences senior, Megan Tomlin. The second and third runners up were pumpkins decorated by CSS graduate students Amanda Goffnett (#2) and Amanda Harden (#3). Congratulations!

AutumnFest 2012

Last Saturday the 37th Annual AutumnFest was held by the MSU College of Agriculture and Natural Resources. AutumnFest is an opportunity for Spartans and their friends and families to visit with CANR departments, student groups, and MI agricultural industry leaders. This year I was able to attend with Dr. Karen Renner to run the Department of Plant, Soil and Microbial Sciences booth. It was a great chance to meet some new faces and them about our recently merged departments (i.e. Crop and Soil Sciences and Plant Pathology). We were even fortunate to be visited by Sparty in the flesh (well…in the foam stuffing).
